But Where Are The Prawns And Anchovies

There is a lot of activity at the Brunei Bay right in front of the town of Sipitang, but where is the industry that could be the signature product and industry for Sipitang? Instead you find them along the highway from Kimanis to Beaufort. Does this mean that the prawn and anchovies are exported? Where to? This is a food for thought for the local Sipitang leaders and communties.

Why Do Yo Have To Stop In Sipitang?

You can do many things in Sipitang, whatever catches you and your family imagination it is there if the long distance and adventure is your turf. There are many things and places of interest to explore and we have not even touched on the historical part of it.

The District Office could play a part on this aspect by putting up information on historical landmarks that could help in the promotion of historical tourism in the area.

Amenities

Sipitang Town has some good amenities like a Community Center, a mosque, children playground, hawkers stalls, rubbish pit that needs to be cleaned, a market and public toilet to name a few.

The Legacy Of Hj Tengah Baguh

The late Hj Tengah Bagul left this building called TBB in Sipitang located at a strategic location to his children. The late Hj Tengah was one of the wealthiest man of his time that he succeeded in having his own building with his own name and the Jalan Rumah Rehat was formerly named after him. The formerly soldiers of the Australian Army had given him an appreciation letter for his help during the Japanese occupation. May his sould rest in peace. Alfatihah

Sipitang Town Is Undergoing Some Changes

Sipitang, the only town with a beach in Sabah right in the center of the town. It only needs some effort to clean up the area and some civic consciousness among the villagers especially the immigrants who are mainly the prawn trawlers operators.

The upgrading project of the seafront is about to be completed and visitors can enjoy the sea breeze during the late afternoon and evening.

The sunset and sunrise is even more magnificent.

Sipitang Used To Be Called Mengalong

Sipitang used to be called Mengalong after the river with the same name and its territory spanned from Mengalong River from the Marintaman area to Trusan in Brunei and was leased by the North Borneo East India Company from the local leader to open up rubber plantations. Mengalong now is just the name of a river in Sipitang District.

Mesapol

There is also a small town called Mesapol just before you reach Sipitang Town from Beaufort and Kota Kinabalu. The flooding problem had caused many people to leave this place, even the new shops are not filled up and the old shophouse looks more popular than the new ones. What you see is the playing field and the mosque at Mesapol.

Sipitang Rest House

The Sipitang Rest House is located in the town area at the end of Jalan Rest House, its location at the seafront. This Rest House only has 6 rooms and the rental is RM65 per night. There is a Restaurant that serves good food and the sea breeze is just awesome.

In the morning you see the prawn trawlers hauling their catch at the Brunei Bay as well as the harvesting of the sea shells by the villagers from the wee hours of the morning. At the distance you see many ships parking waiting for their turn to call at the Labuan Island Port.

R&R SINDUMIN

This R&R is only waiting for the OC to be occupied and operational

The District of Pineapples and Durian

Sipitang and Sindumin are famous for their pineapple and durian particularly during the fruiting season, but there are also other local fruits available like langsat, duku, mangis, mata kucing, water melon, honey melon that grow well in the area. If you visit on Wednesday and Thursday it is the Tamu Sipitang or the local flea market that sells all sorts of things but more local produce. It is just along the road side in the town area.

Visit To Sipitang and Sindumin

Sipitang and Sindumin are two border towns in the southwestern part of Sabah and the journey by road takes about 3 hours to Sipitang from the Capital City of Kota Kinabalu in the north and another half hour to Sindumin from Sipitang. You can stopped by many small towns along the journey like Papar, Membakut, Kimanis, Beaufort and Kota Klias.

The newly upgraded railway line from Tg Aru to Beaufort will soon be opened to the public and you can take this alternative journey to Beaufort before you take a car to Sipitang from Beaufort and the journey takes about 45 minutes. From Beufort you can continue your journey to Tenom by train and as the train rolls you get to see the Padas Gorge of the Padas River and the popular white water rafting at Tenom Panggi.

Refreshment And Food

Many travelers stopped by at Sipitang Town for refreshment and food and accommodation since there is not much of such facilities at Sindumin, but this will soon change once the R&R Sindumin is opened and over the other side of the Sarawak border a new complex/building is also about to be completed.

View Of Sipitang Town

You get a nice postcard view of the Sipitang Town from the Marintaman Beach.

SFI Sipitang

Sabah Forest Industries

You could also visit Sabah Forest Industries as you drive along the Sipitang-Sindumin Road and SFI is the one and only paper factory in Sabah.

Marintaman Beach Hill Sipitang

Some people were fishing when I last visited this area and if you like hill climbing and a better view of Sipitang Town and the surrounding area this could be the cool spot for you.

Marintaman Beach Sipitang

If sea is your turf you could stop by Marintaman Beach in Sipitang before you proceed with your journey and you take the sealed road to the beach, there is a school in front of the junction so you will not miss this junction to the Beach.

A New Land Mark

A new landmark takes shape at the roundabout road to Kemabong, a sub-district town in Tenom in the Interior Residency of Sabah which takes about 1 hour by road. You pass this landmark on your way to Sindumin from Sipitang, a journey which takes about slightly more than half an hour by road and you pass along the Mengalong River and the villages of the Lundayeh community and rice fields.

Sindumin

Sindumin is a Sub-District for Sipitang and it is the border town to Sarawak, Negara Brunei and Kalimantan, Indonesia. There are not much facilities yet in this small town, even the shops are not filled up.

The available facilities include a new ICQ which is the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Centre, some flats for the government personnel, a school and SEDCO has just constructed an R&R (Rest & Relax) building for the tired traveller, just about 200 meters from the checkpoint/border.

The surrounding area is filled with padi fields and some villages before you reach Sipitang Town to the north and Lawas Town to the South and Temburong of Negara Brunei and Bandar Seri Begawan of Negara Brunei.

The closest airport is Lawas Airport which is about 45 minutes by road from the checkpoint serviced by a good road but this airport could only cater for small planes likes the Twin Otter to places in the Interior of Sarawak like Bekalalan and other areas.
